The low-lying excited state electronic manifolds of d6 rhodium(III) complexes of the type [Rh(phen)3]3+ where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline may be tuned over a significant energy range by adding electron releasing alkyl substituents to the ligand backbones.  The tuning effect is sensitive to the type of substuent, the location of substituents on the ligand backbone, and the total number of substituents.  Energy shifts arising from ligand substituents were monitored and quantified via electronic absorption and luminescence measurements at cryogenic temperatures.
