This work aimed to study how the functionalization (azide or alkyne) of a cellulose derivative, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), affects its adsorption on cellulose. Two different levels of functionalization and degrees of substitution of CMCs were investigated. The adsorption of functionalized CMCs and the effect of ionic strength on the adsorption were followed by using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Irreversible adsorption was observed for all the functionalized CMCs at intermediate ionic strength. Activated cellulose surfaces were further modified in-situ by using copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC) with various clickable molecules. The modified cellulose surfaces were characterized by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results pointed out that the adsorption of functionalized polysaccharides in combination with the click chemistry reaction allows for versatile modifications of cellulose surface in aqueous media.
