Certain imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (I45DA) compounds have been synthesized and tested for cell viability. It has been shown that some I45DA compounds kill certain immortalized and cancer cell lines in vitro.  Although these I45DA compounds have this effect, their mechanism of action is unknown.  This research concentrates on elucidating the mechanism of action for I45DA compounds that are affective at killing cancer cells.  Many cancer patients' tumors become immune to their chemotherapies.  In recent times, it is hard to approve the use of chemotherapies that do not have known mechanisms.   This research could potentially add another drug or drugs to the repertoire of available therapies for cancer patients whose chemotherapy options are limited.
