It is well known that advanced age is associated with an elevated risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.  Here we examine whether sex and advanced age affect the expression of 11 molecules that are related to oxidative stress and Alzheimer's disease (Tau protein, amyloid precursor protein (APP), beta-site APP cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3A and GSK3B), presenilin enhancer 2 (PSENEN), ferroportin, divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), transferrin receptor (TFR), insulin receptor (INSR), and AKT1).  Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to determine the mRNA expression levels of these molecules in the hippocampus of two age groups in both male and female Fischer 344/NNiaHSD x Brown Norway/BiNia (F344BN) rats.  Statistical age-related differences in mRNA expression level were found in Tau, PSENEN, INSR, and AKT1.  Gender-related differences in mRNA expression level were also seen in ferroportin and AKT1.
