In a study among K12 students (grade 11) we tried a new way of teaching fatty acids and fat chemistry. During the teaching unit �From Canola to Biodiesel�, the students performed the experiments on esterification, saponification and transesterification, but additionally worked with 2D-animations that show the respective mechanisms on atomic level. For the subject of fats became a highly relevant topic for society, we integrated a WebQuest on the ecological aspects of biodiesel at the end of the unit. The unit was evaluated by using a questionnaire focusing on the learning climate and the computer attitude of the participating students.The students reported a high level of involvement and satisfaction during the learning process while working with the animations. Additionally, the girls' attitude towards computers could be changed positively. Working with the WebQuest, the students could apply their knowledge and experiences on how close science and society are.
