Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) play an important role in the field of nanoscience due to their suitability for a wide range of applications in biomedicine and nanoelectronics. We report here on an inexpensive and reliable method to determine size and concentration of AuNPs by measuring their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Calculations based on a multipole scattering theory by Wolfgang Haiss et al. relate the plasmon peak to those quantities. To evaluate the quality of our results we performed measurements on AuNP solutions of known sizes and concentrations. Agreement between known and experimental values with minimal deviation was found, which supports this approach as a cost efficient and effective method to characterize AuNPs.
