Due to their unique properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) offer many potential uses in the field of nanomedicine ranging from imaging to therapy. Cytotoxicity is a major concern in any biomedical application. We report on results of cytotoxicity measurements using strains of E. coli and S. aureus to observe the biological effects of gold nanoparticles with different sizes and various ligand shell types.We also describe light to heat conversion studies using AuNPs.  Gold nanoparticles generate heat in the presence of electromagnetic radiation, especially under plasmon resonance conditions. This photothermal effect can be used for imaging or therapeutic purposes.
