Education in the field of science is a major focus for Washington College. The student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society is highly committed to the celebration and promotion of chemistry education on our campus and in the community. In the past academic year, the chapter held a school-wide celebration of National Chemistry Week, organized a toiletry drive to donate to the Frank M. Jarmon American Legion Auxiliary for the troops overseas, and raised money in order to donate chemistry equipment to a local school system. This year, the club plans to raise money for chemistry supplies and collect science textbooks to improve science education in Tanzania. Being the International Year of Chemistry, the school has hosted a number of lectures in chemistry. The chapter has sought diligently to spread the word of these exciting lectures to others, helping to promote our field. The chapter also plans to promote �Green� chemistry by incorporating �green� demos in our Magic Shows, making brochures to help advertise ways that the Washington College community can make �green� choices, and a variety of other activities that will lead to a greener campus. Finally, the chapter will be visiting several elementary and middle schools to host magic shows. These magic shows will incorporate a variety of chemistry demonstrations. A summary of the chapter's activities for the upcoming year will be presented at the national meeting in March.
