The American Chemical Society offers student chapters the opportunity to help their communities through grants. The Xavier student chapter was awarded two grants this year, and both helped us impact our community. Those grants were the Community Interactions Grant (CIG) and the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) Grant. The CIG grant allowed us to host Science Saturdays where we educated high school and middle school students about chemistry through demos and forums. We provided tips on how to start a student chapter at the high schools that participated. The IYC grant allowed us to target the Xavier community. We had 'experiment days', followed by seminars on nano-materials, green chemistry and health. Each grant gave us the opportunity to educate our community about new ideas in chemistry. We would like to encourage other chapters to apply for ACS grants so that they too can make a greater impact on their community.
