The International Year of Chemistry presented a unique opportunity for the University of Michigan-Flint ACS student chapter. Performing demonstrations at the campus daycare center and local schools are programs we have enjoyed for years. This year we were able to greatly expand our reach. We developed a new workshop to coach elementary teachers on incorporating chemistry demos in their classes; participated in fund-raising events to donate to Relay for Life; and we formed new bonds with other clubs with our Earth Day programs. For NCW, we formed a new partnership to do demos with the local planetarium, developed a relationship with a sorority during a tie dye/dry ice ice cream social, and made an awesome chalked periodic table in the campus plaza. Our chapter prides itself in being involved in the community and on campus by teaching people about the joys of chemistry. Therefore, we were grateful to celebrate IYC in our community.
