The goal of this project is to enhance awareness of chemistry and biochemistry in our local schools and community.  A demonstration has been developed by our club which illustrates the proton gradient- driven synthesis of ATP in the mitochondria. After a brief description of the role of ATP, ATPase and Mitochondria, the lights are dimmed  and a UV lamp is illuminated. Using fluorescent marbles to represent protons and an aquarium to represent the mitochondria as a whole; the motive force of the marbles triggers strobes that line the fish tank or mitochondria, simulating the creation of ATP.   A video of the demonstration is included via QR code podcast, making it instantly retrievable via any smartphone.  The podcasts will be posted on the USM chemistry club website, the USM Chemistry Club's Facebook page, and on YouTube.
