Ionic liquids have been shown to be good candidates for use in CO2 capture and separation in sovent-based processes.  The synthesis of aprotic heterocyclic anion (AHA) ionic liquids from substituted 1,2,3-triazoles was achieved using Cu-catalyzed click chemistry.  AHA-based ionic liquids do not exhibity significant viscosity increases upon reaction with CO2.  By careful selection of substituents, stabilization of the resulting anion can be effected and beneficial hydrophobicity and increased molar volume can be realized.  The anion selection also plays an important role in the stability of these materials and that has been evaluated.
