Nanomaterials are being used to improve disease diagnostics and treatment. Undoubtedly, for more nanoparticle based assays, tests, and treatment plans to reach the clinic; detection sensitivity, target selectivity, and assay versatility must be realized in a robust, low cost, and field-portable package. Herein, unique solution-phase surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates will be used to detect drug and drug metabolites in the presence and absence of relevant enzymes. The importance of nanoparticle engineering, surface chemistry, and stability will be emphasized. Advantages of using these materials for detection and challenges in achieving reproducible detection will be discussed.
