While the final result of biofuel research and development may be a relatively well characterized product such as biodiesel, many factors can contribute to increased complexity and decreased quality. This may hinder the adoption of these and future alternative fuels in the marketplace. Significant variations can be caused by feedstock changes; the use of novel catalysts and genetically modified organisms; complex, nonlinear scale up issues; and simple process failures as well as microbial degradation during storage. In order to effectively determine the cause of unexpected product variations as well as to study the effects of intended changes to the above described factors, the ability to analyze both trace and high abundance components across a wide range of polarity is essential.
