The complete series of group one metal 4-ethyl-phenoxide (4-Et-C6H4O-) networks have been synthesized using 1,4-dioxane (diox) as a neutral linker.  [{(4-Et-C6H4OLi)4�(diox)2.5}�diox]8  (1 )  and [{(4-Et-C6H4ONa)6�(diox)3}8]  (2 ) form 2-D and 3-D networks, respectively.  Compound 1  is made up of Li4O4 cubanes acting as secondary-building units (SBUs), whereas compound 2  is composed of Na6O6 triple-stack of dimer SBUs.  The SBUs in 1  and 2  are linked through neutral 1,4-dioxane molecules to form a hexagonal layered structure and a primitive cubic (pcu ) network, respectively.  [{(4-Et-C6H4OK)3�(diox)}8]  (3 ), [{(4-Et-C6H4ORb)2�(diox)0.5}8]  (4 ) and [{(4-Et-C6H4OCs)2�(diox)0.5}8] (5 ) are composed of isostructural 1-D inorganic rods built completely by M-OAr interactions.  These inorganic rods are linked through 1,4-dioxane to form a pcu  type hybrid material.  Compound 5  is the first example of a network built from Cs inorganic rods.
