Surfactants used in the preparation of nanoparticles have significant effects on the physical properties of the resultant materials.  Gold nanoparticles are most commonly stabilized with thiol-based surfactants, however a relatively unexplored type of compound that is known to bind to gold is thiourea.  We have been investigating monometallic Au(I) thiourea complexes as precursors for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles.  A series of [Au(I)(thiourea)2]+ complexes have been prepared and characterized, providing well-defined synthons for fabricating gold nanoparticles.  The Au(I) complexes react with different reducing agents to produce nanoparticles of varying diameters as confirmed by electronic absorbance spectroscopy and electron microscopy.  This talk will describe the synthetic procedures used to prepare Au(I) thiourea complexes as well as their reactions with reducing agents to form nanomaterials.
