Cyclic imide dioximes, 1  , are present in amidoxime-based adsorbents used to sequester uranyl ion from seawater.  Evidence suggests these moieties serve as efficient uranium binding sites. Evidence also suggests that metal elution with 1 M HCl may cause degradation of 1  .  To better understand the chemistry that occurs within these adsorbents, conditions that promote conversion of 2  to 1  and the acid hydrolysis of 1  to 3  were experimentally evaluated.  A more acid resistant derivative, 4  , is reported.
