Coordination polymers, commonly known as metal organic frameworks (MOFs), have wide applications due to their exceptional robustness, high porosity and conductivity properties. Conventionally, these polymers are synthesized from toxic copper cyanide precursors by solvothermal and hydrothermal methods. These methods require very high temperature and pressure for prolonged reaction time, making them energy consuming and highly inefficient. The lack of control in the synthesis of these polymers has proved to be a major setback to this field. Herein, we report a new highly efficient and green method for the synthesis of copper(I) (N,N) cyanide coordination polymers, utilizing copper/amino acid complexes with reducing agents such as AIBN and ascorbic acid under ambient reaction conditions.
