A broad series of novel aryl(alkyl)sulfanyl-substituted 5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthrolines (2  ) and 1,10-phenanthrolines (3  ) has been prepared by a new simple procedure: a treatment of the commercially available epoxide (1  ) with various thiols in the presence of a base. Other functional groups attached to the thiol moiety allow a use of the products as building blocks in synthesis of versatile ligands and in functionalization of surfaces. Conformational changes in ligands 2  upon complexation with metal ions were monitored by 1H NMR.
