While there has been steady progress on technologies that degrade chlorocarbon pollutants over the past two or three decades, this has not been the case for fluorocarbon compounds.  In the same timeframe, fluorocarbons have become increasingly important in a wide range of products, including refrigerants, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers and surfactants.  We report here our recent progress on the development of a rhodium-based catalytic system for degradation of fluoroarenes, which comprise one class of fluorocarbons.  The presentation will focus on efforts to delineate the reaction scope and underlying mechanism through model studies, reaction kinetics and isotopic labeling experiments.
