The syntheses of covalently functionalized monolayer graphene oxide by various redox-active, and photosensitizing compounds is reported. Redox active materials of interest in the present study include ferrocene, fullerene and metalloporphyrins. Mono layer graphene oxide has various kinds of functionality such as epoxide, hydroxyl and carboxylic acids. In our present study, we have tried to be selective on the functionalization approach and considered only the carboxylic acid functionality keeping the other functional groups as such. The carboxylic functional group present on the edge of graphene ox ide has been converted to acid chloride by reacting with thionyl chloride which eventually has been treated with various redox and photo-active compounds yielding the covalently functionalized graphene oxide hybrid materials. Characterization of the so formed product has been done by various methods including cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy to find the extent of functionalization.  The D/G ratio in the Raman spectra is used to gather information about the extent of functionalization. SEM has been performed to study the depth profile while TEM has been run to verify the layer thickness of the functionalized material. Further studies are on to explore the photoinduced processes of the various hybrid materials and their application in photovoltaic applications .
