Aqueous phase reforming of oxygenated hydrocarbons was studied over Pt/Al2O3 and Pt-Re/C catalysts at 498K and 2.93MPa in a continuous fixed bed reactor. Influence of space velocity, temperatuer and type of feed was studied.The main focus was directed towards the conversion of C5-C6 sugar alcohols and their mixtures. It was possible to obtain transportation fuel components (hexane etc.) and a better ratio between co-produced H2 and CO2. The gaseous phase mainly comprised of H2 and CO2 as well as light hydrocarbons (C2-C4). the highest yield corresponding to 32% was observed for xylitol at 1.8 h-1, while the maximum yield for sorbitol was 21%, at the same space velocity. An advanced reaction network based on the fact that the most reactive position concurred with a terminal position in the polyol backbone was proposed. This conclusion was also confirmed by the selectivity analysis.
