In the present study, the interaction of well-defined xyloglucan, xylan, arabinogalactan and pectin to non-chemically modified cellulose was characterized by Langmuir isotherm. Four different cellulose substrates were used including highly crystalline cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) from both Gluconacetobacter xylinus (largely cellulose Ia) and cotton (cellulose I�) and amorphous cellulose derived from CNWs (phosphoric acid swollen cellulose nanowhiskers, PASCNWs). The amount of binding and the binding constant of xyloglucan, xylan and pectin to any CNWs were generally higher than to PASCNWs derived from the same source. The binding to Gluconacetobacter xylinus cellulose of xyloglucan, xylan and pectin was always higher than to cotton cellulose. This study highlighted that the adsorption of hemicellulose and pectin on cellulose depended on the crystallinity and crystal allomorph of the cellulose substrates as well as the ionic strength of the system.
