Cellulose, the most abundant renewable resource, is plentiful in plant cell walls. Therefore, our fundamental understanding of how plant cell wall is put together with cellulose and other polysaccharides and their interactions are foundational to the knowledge of regulating mechanical properties and resulting behavior of plant cell walls. Accordingly in various plant cell wall models, interactions between cellulose and other polysaccharides together with their architectural configuration are proposed as key hypotheses, i.e., are described as different chemical interactions including hydrogen and covalent bondings. We developed a two-component cellulose-hemicellulose computational model of cell wall network based on classical mechanical theory with quantitative description of those interactions. The developed computational model (1) is able to predict how those different interactions between cellulose and other polysaccharides contribute to the overall behavior of cell wall and (2) can be used to investigate the validity of key hypotheses of various cell wall models.
