Three heterocyclic N-halamine precursor structures containing amine, amide, or both functional groups have been immobilized onto cotton fabric through epoxide tethering via an imide or amide linkage. The coatings were rendered antimicrobial upon exposure to dilute household bleach (aqueous sodium hypochlorite). The coatings exhibited superior biocidal efficacies with complete 6 log inactivations of S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 within 2 to 10 min of contact time dependent on the structure. Moreover, the coatings were quite stable toward repeated laundering so that recharging was not even necessary after 50 washing cycles. Stabilities of the coatings toward ultraviolet light exposure were also evaluated.
