We present a study of the effects of colloidal gold nanoparticles on the decay rate of the excited state of the photochromic dye Nitro-DAB. Previous experiments showed that decay rates for some fluorescent and photochromic compounds were enhanced as a function of displacement from a metal nanoparticle. Using a theoretical model for excited state kinetics and experimental data from flash photolysis experiments, we were able to determine the nanoparticle-enhanced decay rate of different samples.
