Liquid crystals exhibit various ordered mesophases that are both liquid-like and solid-like in nature.  A specific type of liquid crystals called bent-core or 'banana' molecules have been shown to exhibit bulk chirality even while the individual molecules are achiral.  Previously in our lab, we have synthesized a library of bent-core molecules, 2,7-diacylfluorenes, with 18 total carbons on the two acyl chains.  These molecules showed bulk chirality even though their bending angle was smaller than other bent-core molecules studied before.  We sought to synthesize a new library of 2,7-diacylfluorenes with 17 total carbons on the two acyl chains in order to compare them for bulk chirality and phase changes with the 18 carbon chain molecules.  Our findings will be presented.
