Tetraphenyl porphyrins are well-known photodynamic therapy agents. In the current work, fluorinated tetraphenyl porphyrins were studied to determine their photodynamic properties. Diphenyl anthracene is used in photolysis experiments to demonstrate photodynamic activity. The kinetics of these photolysis experiments appears to be first order in diphenyl anthracene half-order in porphyrin. The luminescence quantum yields were also measured using cresyl violet and unfluorinated tetraphenyl porphyrin as reference molecules. Measurements were performed in several different solvents to eliminate the possibility that solvent played a role in the photolysis reaction. Photolysis at different wavelengths indicated that these fluorinated tetraphenyl porphyrins would only be effective when excited with blue or green light, where the molecules major visible absorption peaks occur.
