This presentation will report on the incorporation of student driven independent research projects into the analytical chemistry curriculum at Northern Kentucky University.  The course structure and benefits of this approach will be discussed.  The utilization of introductory experiments and active-learning modules to provide students with the understanding and confidence necessary to solve questions using instrumentation will be presented.  Examples of student driven research projectsand how they are managed and evaluated will be highlighted.  In addition, methods to overcome potential challenges associated with this approach will be discussed.
