The University at Buffalo/Buffalo Public Schools Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Partnership (UB/BPS ISEP) program focuses on using interdisciplinary research experiences to enhance teacher preparation with a focus on the transition from middle to high school.  Implementation of new classroom content and improved pedagogical content knowledge of teacher is supported by college faculty, graduate and  undergraduate students in classroom, laboratory and after-school programs.  A key part of the work is engaging middle and high school students in active learning and inquiry based activities.  An obvious area of focus in western New  York involves chemical analysis focused on the local environment. With NSF funding, classroom programs from fifth grade to high school chemistry involve the collection and interpretation of analytical data and analysis of longitudinal data using graphing and geographic information analysis.  The talk will present principles of chemical analysis that are embedded into work at middle school levels, and the roles of undergraduate and graduate students in enhancing the learning outcomes of middle and high school students.
