The main objective was to develop technologies and competences enabling the production of novel composite materials, in which wood derived lignin and cellulose fibre are the main constituents. The goal was to determine the melt processability of thermoplastic lignins, plasticize lignins with case-suitable plasticizers to ease the processing of the material and produce initial lignin composites reinforced with cellulose fibers. Lignins used in the trials were not processable without plasticization. Suitable plasticizers were found and the plasticized lignin was melt compounded with cellulose fibres and the test samples were injection moulded. DSC analysis was conducted and mechanical properties were measured. The initial tensile test results of the plasticized lignin reinforced with cellulose fibres were promising. Addition of cellulose fibres into plasticized lignin matrix improved mechanical properties of the lignin significantly.
