Lignin has been investigated for years as a green additive for plastics.  Its success in such applications is highly dependent on the thermal properties and its interactions with other polymers.  Because of this, there is a large amount of research focused on the derivatization of lignin in order to promote compatibilization.  Current work examines the synthesis and characterization of lignin mixed esters and their surprising thermal properties.  The exploitation of these characteristics could lead to new uses for lignin in plastics and other materials.
