A Cu(111)�10o surface structure spread single crystal has been prepared and characterized for study of structure sensitive surface chemistry.  STM has been used to examine the surface structure and has shown that the surface is formed of (111) terraces separated by monoatomic steps.  There is no evidence of step bunching on the clean surfaces and the step density is close that expected based on the expected crystallographic orientation at each point across the surface. The steps edges are roughened.  STM and XPS have been used to study the dissociative adsorption of O2 on the surface at room temperature.  This has been accomplished by measuring the uptake of oxygen along the (211) direction passing through the (111) pole.  On either side of the (111) pole the step edges have two different structures, (110) steps and (100) steps).  XPS shows that the density of step edges influences the uptake of oxygen indicating that step edges are the primary sites for dissociation of oxygen on the surface.  STM shows that the (100) step edges facet during oxidation whereas the (110) step edges do not.
