Fabrication of nanocomposite materials with low gas permeability was accomplished by combining the benefits of thiol-ene networks and tubular nanoparticles.  This was done using thiol monomers, trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (3T) and ethylene bis(3-mercaptopropionate) (GDMP), in combination with the ene monomer, 1,3,5-triallyl-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4,6-trione (TTT), to form polymer matrices.  Halloysite nanotubes, both unmodified and those modified with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxy silane, were dispersed within these matrices at varied weight percentages.  Even dispersion and desired composition were achieved in all materials.  Gas barrier properties were measured using a Mocon OX-TRAN 2/21.  Water vapor barrier properties, glass transition temperatures, material composition, and nanotube dispersion were also examined for each film.  It was found that both gas and water vapor barrier permeability were lowered by the addition of nanotubes.  Overall, modified nanotubes gave more of an improvement to barrier properties than the unmodified, while networks containing GDMP were more greatly affected by the addition of nanotubes than 3T networks.
