Peptide-based methods represent emerging approaches for the fabrication and assembly of inorganic nanomaterials into a variety of motifs.  At present, how such specific peptides bind the surface remains poorly understood, where such an understanding could be used to increase assembly complexity.  In an attempt to monitor such events, we have employed the self-assembly of citrate-capped Au nanoparticles using amino acids.  These simple biomolecules are able to direct nanoparticle assembly where the binding strength of the residues controls the organization rate and the final nanoparticle 3D structure.  Together, this method may represent a new technique to interrogate the biotic/abiotic surface of bionanomaterials to elucidate motifs required for the design of materials directing peptide sequences that could result in increased geometrical control of 3D hierarchically assembled materials.
