The effect of molecular and chemical parameters on photochemical degradation reactions can be conveniently studied using polymers with metal-metal bonds along their backbone.  We are exploring the use of click chemistry to prepare metal-metal-bond-containing polymers with both linear and nonlinear geometries.  Specifically, we have used the Huisgen reaction to prepare polymers using the [(h5-C5H4(CH2)3OC(O)-(CH2)3C=CH)Mo(CO)3]2 complex (1 ) and the [(h5-C5H4(CH2)3OC(O)-(CH2)3N3)Mo(CO)3]2 complex (2 ).  Complex 2  has shown surprising reactivity with many common Huisgen reaction catalysts.  However, we found that Cu(IMes)Cl (IMes = 1,3-dimesityl-imidazol-2-ylidene) will catalyze the formation of nonlinear polymers with complex 2 .  Current work is focused on optimizing the formation of star polymers and examining their degradation.
