Galileoscope LLC was founded in 2008 to design, develop, manufacture, and distribute high quality, low-cost telescopes for the International Year of Astronomy - 2009. A lengthy and remarkably complicated process ensued that ultimately resulted in the successful distribution of more than 200,000 telescopes, a third-world telescope donation program, and the continuing operation of the company promoting science education and outreach. Examining the process of creating and running this company offers kernels of insight into the trials and tribulations of engaging in a worldwide technology business venture that are applicable to any discipline and nearly any product. This talk will address the history of this company, and discuss lessons-learned that will benefit others anticipating starting their own firms.
