Newly, Korean people are consuming seaweeds almost 4 times more now than three decades ago. It is well known that seaweeds contain lots of soluble dietary fiber in addition to micronutrients such as iodine and beta-carotene as well as some bioactive components. Seaweeds are considered to be effective for preventing chronic diseases including obesity, atherosclerosis, and diabetes mellitus. However, the effects of sea mustard on the maturation and immunostimulatroy activities exhibited by dendritic cells remain, for the most part, unknown. In this study, we purified compound A from sea mustard (CSM) and have attempted to determine whether CSM can influence surface molecule expression, antigen uptake capacity, cytokine production, and capacity to induce T-cell differentiation underlying these phenomena in murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. CSM was shown to regulate the expression of surface molecules such as CD80, CD86, MHC class I, and MHC class II in the dendritic cells. CSM-treated dendritic cells proved highly efficient with regard to antigen capture through the mannose receptor-mediated endocytosis. Additionally, CSM-treated dendritic cells evidenced an impaired induction of Th1 immune response, and a normal cell-mediated immune response. These findings provide a new insight into the immunopharmacological functions of CSM, especially with regard to their impact on the dendritic cells and T cells.
