Current and future legislation aims to             restrict the use of solventborne (high-VOC) based coating             systems with new             waterborne (low-VOC) polymer coating systems. However, in             applications where             aesthetics and performance guide the selection of a coating             system, current             water-borne clear coatings have not surpassed the superior             barrier properties             of solvent systems.             Incorporating silicate nano-crystals into a             water-borne polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) latex emulsion is             expected to reduce             water sensitivity; and can thus improve the barrier             properties of an             environmentally friendly coating to meet or exceed the long             term performance of             traditional solvent based coatings. Surface modification to             exfoliate the             platelets and control long range order of the Laponite was             distinguished by SAXS-XRD             as changes in interlayer spacing. Barrier properties of             traditional and nanocomposite             films were characterized by EIS in both the wet and dry             polymer coatings and             to provide insight on the differences in             coating systems during film formation and after drying.
