We report here on the synthesis of a heterogeneous catalyst comprised of both well-defined isolated Lewis acid Ti centers and propyl amine groups in close proximity supported on a silica surface.  We employ bulky organic protecting groups and templates during the stepwise synthesis to design materials in a controlled fashion and to prevent the mutual anhilitation of active sites during synthesis.  DRUV-vis and preliminary cyclooctene epoxidation reaction results demonstrate that the Ti4+ site remains intact in the presence of the amine that has been liberated from the template, in contrast to direct grafting of an unprotected amine.  CO2 adsorption studies, used as a probe of amine site accessibility and inter-amine spacing, demonstrates the retention of activity at the amine site.  Preliminary results of acid-base catalysis for the carbon-carbon bond forming Knoevenagel condensation reaction over these materials are also presented.
