The influence of structural defects on the catalytic activities of Cu and Mo nano structures is of great interest in the industrial synthesis of methanol and hydrodesulfurization, respectively. The atoms occupying edge sites are of particular interest because of positive correlation between coordination number and reactivity.  Electron beam lithography allows for the unique possibility of varying the surface-to-edge ratio by varying the shape.  This nanofabrication technique leads to very precise degree of edge formation in nano clusters and thereby allows the study of controlled edge site reactivity.
