The immobilization of rhodium complexes through covalent bond formation with functional groups on supports is the most commonly employed method to form heterogenized organometallic catalysts.  However, investigations of the local structure of the rhodium complex upon immobilization on surface-functionalized supports are still scarce and there has been no conclusive study to date.  Since the structure of heterogenized Wilkinson's catalyst is not only of principal scientific interest, but also of great importance for the further applications of this heterogeneous catalyst, it is necessary to gain greater insight into the nature of rhodium structure.  Herein, we present our work on elucidating the exact structures of grafted Rh-complexes on surface-functionalized SBA-15 by means of a series of techniques including XRD, BET, HRTEM, solid-state NMR, XPS, and Rh K-edge EXAFS. Their catalytic performance for the regio- and stereoselective addition of alkynes to thiols and sulfonic acids will also be presented.
