The three main performance descriptors of heterogeneous catalysts are activity, selectivity and durability. An important goal of fundamental studies into the synthesis of heterogeneous catalytic materials is to understand the properties that control these descriptors. Recently Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) has been employed to synthesize supported metal and metal oxide catalytic materials. The uniformity and flexibility inherent to the ALD method has made it possible to produce catalysts having exceptional performance in selectivity and durability as well as activity. Studies of these materials shed new light on the properties that produce high performance.
