National Library of Medicine (NLM) efforts to assist first responders and others include tools provided free to users. One tool is WISER, the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders. WISER was designed with a focus on meeting the information needs of first responders facing chemical transportation and other hazardous material (HazMat) incidents. WISER uses information from Federal government and other resources, e.g., extensive content from NLM's Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB�). WISER's wide range of information on substances includes substance identification support, human health information, and containment and suppression advice. It is designed to be easy to use, intuitive, and able to provide accurate, trustworthy information when and where it is needed, e.g., on-site for first responders at an emergency. WISER is available for download as a standalone application on Microsoft Windows PCs,. It is also available for Windows Mobile devices and Palm OS PDAs, as a mobile app for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android smartphones, and online via WebWISER.
