Syngas is one of the most important industrial reaction precursors. Currently, the most common method to produce syngas is the partial oxidation or steam reforming of methane (CH4). However, these processes typically occur in reactors whose operation at elevated temperatures imposes the need for high quality heat, which can be difficult and expensive to obtain.Therefore, there has been a significant push in recent years to identify methane activation pathways that facilitate much lower operating temperatures, where either low quality or no heat is needed. Recent work in our group has focused on the development of a new ultra-low temperature (25-40�C) electrochemical method for oxidizing CH4 to produce syngas.This talk will focus on catalyst development, reactor assembly and performance of a new room temperature carbonate electrochemical device to convert methane directly to syngas. A typical performance curve for this syngas reactor is shown in Figure 1 (90% RH).
