�Applied surface chemistry� is a professional course with a strong connection to the practice in the chemistry and chemical engineering. For the terminal assessment, the undergraduates' grasp of such a course is determined by a single closed examination at the end of the course. This examination tests only the basic knowledge and regulations, ignoring the apprasil  of the understanding of the practical application based on the basic theory. In order to solve this problem, we have adopted the cumulative-test mode to check the students. This method, in essence, puts the examinations in the whole process of the course teaching instead of that only in the end of the course. The key point of the cumulative examination is to combine the testing goals with the teaching goals of the course most closely, and then decompose the test contents of the course into different sections. Based on the requirements of the teaching goals, we set down the following testing items: final close exam paper 50-60% (the must-grasped basic knowledge, basic theory and basic methods of the course), open exam paper 10-20% (the assessment of the tough points and difficult subjects), self-learning report 10% (the easily understood contents in the course) and class discussion 20% (the related contents outside the course needed the presentation and the discussion in the class) Since 2005, we have adopted the cumulative examination mode in the course. 95% of students present their positive effects on it. But, some students thought this would reduce the excellent rate of students and influence the recommending for the admission to the graduate school by the grade rank of the students. So the weightiness ratio of test items in the whole course still needs some more investigation and practice in future.
