Innovation and research courses are set up by Harbin Institute of Technology in China for the low-grade undergraduates. The  aim of the course is the cultivation and  development of the innovative person. �Applies surface chemistry basis� is a new open innovation and research course since 2009. The course is open to the undergraduates of all specialties of science or engineering, who have different chemical foundations and backgrounds. Therefore, an analyses of the origin of the students is necessary and important for the determination of the teaching goals, that is, the teaching content(s) or teaching methods should be adjusted to meet the different need of the students with different majors. For example,  students with a major closely related to the chemistry, will have the higher teaching goals adopted by increasing the depth and width of the surface chemistry theory and practice; whereas for students not related to the chemistry, the teaching goals are mainly focused on the surface phenomena and the application of the surface chemistry theory. Due to the characteristics of such  a course, i.e. the universality of the surface phenomena, we have started our course based on the interest of the course, the practical application of the knowledge and the intersection of the different majors to the surface chemistry. We give some practical examples and ask the students to use the surface chemistry knowledge to make an explanation to improve the enthusiasm to the research. Other kinds of methods, such as, task-based learning and class discussion are also used during the teaching process. Through the efforts in the instructional design and teaching methods, the initial thinking and learning of the students are activated and better teaching results are obtained. This is very consistent with the demands of innovation and research courses.
