Our school is participating in the ENVIRO-CHEM Project at UPR-Arecibo. We are performing research addressing the uptake of heavy metals by the plant Salvinia minima  from the Ca�o Tiburones (CT). The CT is a swampy depression and the largest and extensive wetland in Puerto Rico. This natural wetland has been exposed to contamination by aqueous effluents produced from industrial activities, waste disposal sites, local or municipal sewage, and agricultural activities. The present study aims to determine the levels of copper, zinc, cadmium and chromium in Salvinia minima  plant samples collected from the CT. Analysis will be performed by means of a flame atomic absorption spectrometer. Physico-chemical results showed average levels of temperature (24.6 oC), dissolved oxygen (0.67), pH (7.08), and turbidity (5.8) in sampling station 1 while average measurements of physico-chemical parameters included temperature (24.9 oC), dissolved oxygen (0.6), and pH (7.06) were found in station 2.
