The Chemistry and Classics Departments at Randolph-Macon College have been developing a new course in Chemistry and Art History as part of our Freshman Seminar Series.  The year-long course is co-taught by a chemist and an art historian.  The goals of the chemistry portion are twofold: (1) to show how advancements in chemistry were closely entwined with the development of art and aesthetics in ancient civilizations and (2) to re-create the ancient art techniques in the laboratory while rationalizing the experiments with a modern scientific understanding of the chemistry.  The courses traces the historical development of chemistry as reflected in art - as the art history unfolds chronologically we discover how chemical technology co-developed.  We use only those topics from �modern� chemistry that are needed to understand the technology.  This poster will focus on more recent experiments developed for the course.
