Cheminformatics technology has become a ubiquitous part of the drug discovery process.  Graduate level courses in molecular modeling and cheminformatics are offered at several universities, but their content varies greatly and they are usually electives.  At UNC-Chapel Hill, the division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry has taught such a course for over 20 years as a required part of its curriculum in the Pharmaceutical Sciences doctoral program.  This is likely to be the longest-running required course of its type.  It is also unusual in its emphasis on ligand-based modeling methods, as opposed to the more common emphasis on structure-based design methods.  The course includes both classrooms lectures and the hands-on laboratory portion to teach students both the foundational material and practical skills to conduct applied studies. We will discuss the current form of the syllabus and laboratory exercises, and metrics to evaluate student progress.
